Welcome to!A subreddit for all of those who love the Total War series. I like to go with Gelt as the starting LL, because of that global armour bonus. Move round Reikland in a circle, recruiting every turn, and you can easily have total control by turn 5. Rush walls in every minor settlement to defend against the Beastmen, then wait for an opportunity to take Marienburg (Gelt’s Mortar starting unit really helps here). After that, there’s no fixed plan - it depends on diplomacy with the other Electors, and how the Vampires are doing. For armies, I use Swordsmen and Halberdiers as soon as possible, swapping out the Swordsmen for Greatswords when I can - a main line of Greatswords, with Halberdiers to help guard the flanks. Gelt’s armour bonus really helps your low-Tier infantry, especially Halberds since I like to use them even late-game.

Cav is basically whatever you can get until Demigryphs, at which point I like to go with 2 of each type per army - one of each type on each flank. For Heroes, I go with 2 per army, so with my Lord and 2 Heroes I have one melee, one caster and one support. For the LLs, Gelt is the caster so I have an Empire Captain (melee) and a Warrior Priest (support). Franz is a melee so he gets a Light Wizard (caster) and Warrior Priest (support).
Volkmar is mainly support so he gets an Empire Captain (melee) and a Light Wizard (caster). I go with Light Wizards because I find it to be the most useful - Pha’s Protection is great for shoring up your sometimes shaky melee line, and Net of Amyntok is still incredibly useful, even after the massive nerf bat it took recently.

I swap out all my ranged units for artillery once I can - my personal preferences are Hellstorm Rocket Batteries and Luminarks of Hysh. Gelt in particular gets buffs to Luminarks which make them even more powerful, and giving him the Templehof Luminark RoR gives him access to Net of Amyntok without the need for a Light Wizard. I also start as Gelt, for much the same reason. Lore of Metal actually works quite nicely these days too.I tend to go heavy on the artillery towards the late game, especially with Gelt in charge. There's something about a 'grand battery' army that I really enjoy.Line of hellblasters at the front, handgunners for 'point defence', then some mortars or helstorms. Demigryphs and/or steam tanks for charging and pinning infantry lines. All supported by wizards (with Net) and maybe a Luminark on anti-lord/monster duty.Flaming Sword of Rhin also works on missile damage too. Personally High Elves, either of the factions. Tyrion is an absolute monster levelled up and can tank armies, Teclis is a fucking daemon with his magic.I love unifying Ulthuan as Tyrion then flattening Naggarond before going to norsca to become the saviour of the old world.I like to play Teclis in a lore-friendly way.
Acting as a diplomat to the younger races and travelling to far flung places.I also like the eternal struggle of the empire, fighting the various horrors of the world. I’m currently halfway through a campaign with Karl Franz and I will never get bored of multiple hellstorm rocket batteries and cannons in every army?. Lizardmen are great fun because of all the massive stompy dinosaurs that you send charging into swarms of Skaven to send them flying.

Also having a tiny skink mage on top of an ancient Stegadon doing this is hilarious. Hola skinks!I do love the idea of the Dwarfs and have played them a lot, but I do really miss having monsters and cavalry for the flanking charges.

It's also just a bit easy to hang back and obliterate most stuff from range which isn't terribly engaging play, similar problems with all elves.
IDK, I play without mods but it depends on your playstyle. For me, it would be Dwarves as they have a strong eco, safe start and strong infantry/missile units and artillery. Once you survive the first wave of greenskin attacks, you can safely expand, focus on eco and getting trade up, so send someone to meet the other civs that you get diplo bonus's with (southern realms, bretonnia, empire, etc.) Always play defensively with dwarves though, or you'll get a grudgestorm that will be the end of you. After that for me would be bretonnia, (the two subfactions of bretonnia are far harder) They dont get upkeep problems for multiple armies, and their cav is amazing, plus you don't fight other bretonnian factions. A lot of people dislike bretonnia because their starting units (their infantry) are garbage, but you can get marienburg in 2-3 turns which gives you a ton of money, and by turn 40 you can field an army of knights. The thing about TWW2 is that the factions all play very differently. For instance I just listed the two factions that I have an easier time with because they play very straight forward, but you could also pick dark elves and send a raiding army out to sack ulthuan/bretonnia for money/slaves while another army protects the homefront. Same for Orks, you can raid/sack the entire empire with one army and never need for gold.If its your first time playing though, I would stay away from skaven and TK, as they play incredibly different from any other faction. Multiplayer idk. Campaign, I think Isabella or vampire counts.
Vampire heros in her army are really strong, and you can take drakenhof really easily. Vlad gives a factionwide experience bonus which is pretty op. Drakenhof is a really strong capital city. And because of their healing, when you win battles on vampire counts you win really hard.
So you don't have to worry about replenishment and a stack of isabella with some varghulfs and terrorgheists and vampire heroes and lightning strike can wipe out the entire chaos invasion easily cause they regen back to full at the end of each fight. As Someone else pointed out, Beastmen are flat out awful.
I've never been frightened to have then declare war on me since the AI is awful with them.but even a human player cant reach the same heights as practically any other race. The ONE possibly way they could redeem themselves is their -50% upkeep upgrade.but that requires gimping your growth so they once again suck. The Wood Elves Raze for more, get a home base, and have some really awesome units and techs.
It is a running joke that they are the best chaos faction because of their tendency to just raze everything for hordes of money when in the hands of a player or old AI.Really late game and Really early game I would say Vampire counts are the number 1 due to the raise dead mechanic, which only grows in strength. Mid game they fall of again though untill they can get their high level buildings and more massive grave sites appear.
Im gonna diverge from the people bashing beastmen and say beastmen are not weak. They are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and one dimensional, thats not debatable, but with easy access to mino spam followed by an upkeep drop, they are stupidly strong. Beastmen do need recruit time reductions for bestigors and centigors to encourage build variety, and they need better replenishment for the same reason, but seriously, spam minotaurs and later cygors and youre basically unstoppable. For the factions thoughIts really going to come down to player bias and playstyle to decide which are strongest/weakest, that said, Dwarves, Wood Elves and Dark Elves, with most of their assorted sub-factions, are easily top tier, while Skarsnik and Angrund are probably at the bottom of the pack, objectively speaking.
